Developing your skills
The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children's Workforce
This is an integral part of Every Child Matters, setting out the basic skills and knowledge needed by people (including volunteers) whose work brings them into regular contact with children, young people and families.
The skills and knowledge are described under 6 main headings:
- Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and families
- Child and young person development
- Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child
- Supporting transitions
- Multi-agency working
- Sharing information
The MLA Self Assessment Framework
The MLA (Museums, Libraries and Archives Council) Self Assessment Framework has been produced to help staff working in museums, libraries and archives to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to work in partnership with organisations working with children and young people.
It interprets the 6 areas of expertise from the ECM Common Core and provides a toolkit to help you to work on them.
It can be used by anyone working directly or indirectly with children, young people and families in a museum.
